Abstract

This article analyzes the internalization of wasathiyyah values in Islamic education through interfaith tolerance practices in the Jetayu area of Pekalongan City. The research gap lies in the tendency of religious moderation studies to focus on concepts, policies, or descriptions of harmony, while pedagogical readings of interfaith social practices as learning resources for Islamic education remain limited. The simultaneous occurrence of Good Friday and Friday prayer on April 3, 2026, around Al-Ikhlas Mosque and the Indonesian Christian Church in Pekalongan was selected because it reveals the intersection of religious rituals, shared social space, interfaith communication, and institutional support. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving two purposively selected key informants, namely an administrator of Al-Ikhlas Mosque and an elder of the Indonesian Christian Church, supported by documentary data. Data validity was maintained through source and technique triangulation, while the data were analyzed through reduction, thematic presentation, and conclusion drawing using the concepts of wasathiyyah, religious moderation, multicultural Islamic education, and tolerance theory. The findings show that social harmony in Jetayu is not spontaneous but is constructed through communication, activity notification, sound system management, support from FKUB and security officers, and mutual awareness in maintaining worship comfort. These practices embody tasamuh, tawazun, i'tidal, shura, respect for diversity, and non-violence. The article contributes a novel argument that interfaith tolerance practices can be read as a social laboratory for Islamic education, indicating that the internalization of wasathiyyah should be developed through experience, exemplary conduct, reflection, and local case analysis rather than normative instruction alone.
